Period Comparison

Compares one period's data against the previous one, analyzing changes and anomalies. Use to understand what changed.

Pack: Reports & Decisions

Procedure

  1. 1Define the two periods, same length
  2. 2Compare metrics and compute absolute and percentage change
  3. 3Flag anomalies: changes beyond the datum's typical threshold
  4. 4For each anomaly, list 3 verifiable hypotheses (not one explanation)
  5. 5State which data would be needed to confirm

Rules

  • · More revenue never equals success alone: look at margin with revenue
  • · Anomalies are flagged, never explained with certainty
  • · Every change comes with its absolute-value change

Expected output

Comparison table (period A, period B, delta, delta %) + anomalies + verifiable hypotheses

When not to use it

  • · Different-length periods: normalize per day before comparing
  • · Data with fewer than 2 periods: comparison is meaningless
